Diffusion & Osmosis S7L2
2
Goals: Define- Diffusion Define- Osmosis
Define- Semi Permeable Membrane Define- Selectively Permeable Define- Homeostasis Define- Passive and Active Transport Define- Endo and Exocytose
3
Predict: what will happen when I spray this
4
Define Diffusion The movement of molecules from a area in which they are highly concentrated to a area in which they are less concentrated. Think of a spill. Does all of the liquid stay in one place?
5
Draw a diagram of an example of diffusion we saw in class.
6
3 Minute Walk About, Let’s act out diffusion.
7
Define osmosis The diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane. Water moves from an area of high to low concentration
8
What does high concentration mean?
It means an area with a lot of something. Example: sweet Kool-Aid has a lot of sugar (high concentration) and water has a low concentration of sugar (none)
9
What happens if I drop these dry sponges into a sink of water?
Water moves from high concentration (bucket) to low (sponge)
10
Quick write with a partner: Define osmosis and diffusion in your own word.
11
Why are osmosis & diffusion important?
All living things have certain requirements they must satisfy in order to remain alive. These include exchanging gases (usually CO2 and O2), taking in water, minerals, and food, and eliminating wastes.
12
Why are osmosis & diffusion important?
All living things have certain requirements they must satisfy in order to remain alive – maintain homeostasis These include exchanging gases (usually CO2 and O2), taking in water, minerals, and food, and eliminating wastes. These tasks happen at the cellular level. Molecules move through the cell membrane by diffusion
13
Homeostasis Your cells are in a balancing act. Some times it is thirsty and some times it has to go. But homeostasis is when it just is “balanced”.
14
Quick Write with a partner: Why are osmosis & diffusion important?
15
Selectively permeable membrane
A membrane that allows only certain materials to cross it Materials pass through pores in the membrane
16
Active Transport=Energy
17
Passive Transport=Slips in
18
Define selectively permeable membrane
19
Identify the types of diffusion
20
Endocytosis Stuff (food, waste, water) gets in
The cell literally acts like a big mouth and opens the choo choo
21
Exocytose Stuff has to go “exits”
22
This is how it works
23
Create a Venn Diagram of Diffusion and Osmosis
