CPT 123 Internet Skills Class Notes Audio/Video Communication Session

Communication 2 Internet Services that allow users to communicate directly may fall into the categories of real-time audio and video communications without recording the information Means for users to work together in new ways

Communication 3 Internet real-time audio and video services make it possible to Send voice to another user or group of users Send a live television image to a user or group of users Broadcast audio or video information throughout the Internet

Communication 4 A participant must have an Internet connection with sufficient capacity and a computer with special hardware The capacity of a network is known as its bandwidth Live video or audio requires high bandwidth since audio and video packets are generated rapidly

Communication 5 If insufficient bandwidth for video and audio exist on the network, the audio and video appear to freeze and then jump ahead Moving pictures require approximately 100 times more bandwidth than continuous audio, a connection with sufficient bandwidth for audio may not have sufficient for video

Communication 6 In addition a participant must have a microphone to capture sound speakers to reproduce sounds a camera to record images a high speed processor to manipulate video and audio without introducing delay

Communication 7 Many commercial radio stations are available over the Internet Browsers usually require a plugin before it can process digitized audio

Communication 8 Audio + Video

Communication 9 Audio Teleconferencing is an Internet service that allows a group of users to hold an audio discussion on the Internet The moderator runs software that organizes and controls the discussion The software requests the names of the participants and then attempts to contact the participants

Communication 10 The software may display a message on each participant’s screen that a teleconference exists. The participant can choose to join the teleconference or ignore the message and not participate in the teleconference

Communication 11 The participant must run a program that handles audio reception and transmission The program monitors the participants microphone, converts the signal, and sends a copy to the other participants of the teleconference All participants hear the conversation

Communication 12 Audio teleconferencing allows participants to convey and understand emotion since voice carries inflection that tells the listener the emotion of the speaker A step above written communication

Communication 13 Audio teleconferencing and shared whiteboard services provide a means for people to work together from diverse locations Audio teleconferencing and shared whiteboarding are good vehicles when preparing or reviewing documents

Communication 14 Face-to-face interaction however usually works better when brainstorming or the generation of ideas are necessary Also when specific topics are discussed the facial body language is more meaningful than the spoken word Video teleconferencing services allow this value added communication

Communication 15 The moderator runs a program that starts the session, the software allows the user to enter information concerning the other participants and contacts them When a participant joins the conference an image from the camera on their machine appears in a small window on the other participant’s screen

Communication 16 Video alone done not help people communicate Most video teleconferencing services incorporate both video and audio into a single teleconference session New participants hear as well as see all other participants when they join a teleconference

Communication 17 When large numbers of participants attend the teleconference, participants screens cannot hole individual images from cameras Participants must gather in small groups in locations that have a camera and a large-screen projection display

Communication 18 The entire room becomes a single participant in the teleconference Sending audio for an entire room can be difficult Audio and video teleconferencing can be combined with whiteboarding
