3.  German sociologist  Published The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism in 1904  Religion existed because people needed a system of basic beliefs to make sense of existence, identity and derive meaning.

There is nothing that can be done to change this fate.  Divine Transcendence – No human knows the will of God except that revealed in the Bible. Weber suggested that this left them with an “inner loneliness” since they did not know if they were to be saved and there was nothing they could do to earn their salvation.

Tawney  Did not understand all the religions like he claimed – Jews were seen to be far more capitalist in nature.  Why was wealth selected as an indication of God’s favour? How come money was not shared with the poor? Would that not seem more religious?
