7 President Bush’s FY 09 Budget President introduced budget on February 4 Department of Education funded at $52.9 billion (essentially level funding) Budget eliminates 47 education programs and sharply reduces 11 others (a $4 billion cut) Department of Labor budget cut as well

Association for Career and Technical Education 8 FY 09 Budget Resolution President’s Budget not being seriously considered House and Senate Budget Committees passed budget resolutions in March Both assume increases in “Function 500” education, training, and social services programs House has higher discretionary spending cap

Association for Career and Technical Education 9 FY 09 Budget Resolution Tentative agreement reached – budget delayed due to snag in Farm bill Budget vote likely to be delayed until June Appropriations Committees will begin moving forward soon End game strategy uncertain

Association for Career and Technical Education 17 Sustainability Growing interest in Congress in a broad range of energy sustainability issues – from buildings to workforce preparation A number of bills in Committee stage –H.R. 3021: 21st Century High-Performing Public School Facilities Act We will be following closely for CTE implications

Association for Career and Technical Education 18 CTE Caucus Formed in House in April 2007 by: –Rep. Brian Baird (D-WA) –Rep. Phil English (R-PA) Its mission is to enhance awareness in Congress of the importance of CTE in preparing a well-educated and skilled workforce in America.
