3 3 Types of Information Sources Encyclopedias – Background Dictionaries – Vocabulary of topic Books – General and detailed information Internet – General and detailed information. – Is it always authoritative?

4 4 Catalog and Article Databases The contents are different. – Academic Search Elite and Expanded Academic contain articles or article citations. – Library catalog Voyager contains records of books, audio recordings, videos, etc. – Catalog has periodical titles, not articles Can look up what journals, newspapers, magazines Library has available.

11 11 Find Subject Terms for Topics Do a keyword search on the topic. Choose relevant title from results list. Look for appropriate subject heading in the item record.

13 13 Subject Search Tips List of subject headings shows different subdivisions, or aspects, of the topic. Subject terms may vary in different databases. Ask a librarian for help subject searching.

14 14 When to Use Keyword and Subject Searches Keyword search when: – There are no subject terms for your topic – The database is unfamiliar and topic coverage is not known – You want a high number of results Subject search when: – You need fewer, more relevant results – You know some subject terms from another database

17 17 Evaluate Scope coverage Scope means coverage – Is source focused on an aspect or an overview? – Does source cover all points of view, or is it one sided? – Is coverage local, regional, or international? Quick evaluation: Hate Crimes on Campus – http://ncjrs.gov/pdffiles1/bja/187249.pdf

18 18 Evaluate Relevancy Relevancy means how the information source relates to a topic. useful – Does the source contain useful information on the topic? – How does it relate to the topic? Contains background information? Takes a position on a topic? Do portions, or the whole source, relate to the topic?
