1 Doing a search in Bibliography of British and Irish history and exporting references to the Refworks database

2 Log on via the Portal with your network username and password Click on Learning Resources tab Under Library Databases click on B and select Bibliography of British and Irish History

4 You can do a simple or an advanced search

5 This what the advanced search screen looks like

6 This the simple search screen. We will do a simple search using the keyword plantation Total number of hits for plantation

7 When you finish typing in you search term you get a drop down menu suggesting alternative search terms. We will select Plantation,Ulster

8 Total number of hits for Plantation, Ulster Click on search to see the hits

9 These are the first 6 of the 106 hits We will select number 4

10 We are told this is a journal article The article is from the journal History Ireland If we click on the journal title we get all the articles from the journal indexed by BBIH There is full text online access via the JSTOR database. We subscribe to JSTOR. If you click on this link you are taken to a list of the History of Ireland holdings in JSTOR

11 Here are the links to the holding. The article is in Vol. 15 Issue 4 2007

13 If you click here you will go directly to the article

14 This is the first page of the article

15 These are all hyperlinks For example if we click on Raymond Gillespie we get all articles & book chapters by him indexed in BBIH

19 Once again we will click on Find It to see if the item is in the Library system This item is a book

20 The Library do not have everything which is indexed in BBIH. In this case if you want to see the book apply for it through the Library’s Document Delivery service.

21 The Library subscribes to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography online database. If you click on this link you get access to the article about Chichester.

23 You may wish to gather references for a bibliography. There are various reference management systems. The Library subscribes to the Refworks system. The following slides will illustrate how to organise your references in Refworks

24 Here are 6 of our Ulster Plantation hits We will select 5 of these records ● ● ● ● ● ● We can view the selected records

25 This is the first of our 5 records. This one Is an article in a book We can export our references to Refworks from our previous brief list of titles or from this list. To do this click on export

26 To export select Refworks and click on Export ●

27 Now click on SAVE

28 Save to the Desktop Here is the file name Click on Save

29 Here is our file on the Desktop And this is what it looks like in Notepad. This will change once we export to Refworks

30 We now need to open up Refworks. To do this logon via the Portal, select the Learning Resources tab, and under Library databases select Refworks If you haven’t already registered with Refworks you will be asked to do so.

31 At a drop down menu under References Select Import

32 Change Import filter/data Source and Database to International Medieval Bibliography Now click on Browse

33 Select the file and then click on Open

34 The file is now ready to Import Click on Import

35 You now get this screen. To see the references click on View last imported folder

36 Here are the 5 imported references

37 We will create a folder called Plantation. To do this click on Folders, and at the drop down menu select Create new folder

38 Name the folder and click on OK

39 These are the 5 references. We will put all 5 in the Plantation folder We will select all in the list ● Click on the arrow at the Put in folder box

40 From the drop down menu select the Plantation folder

41 When you get this click on OK You then get this message Now go to either View or Folders and select Plantation from the drop down menus

42 Here is the Plantation folder Now click on Bibliography

43 Here is the Bibliography screen Click on the arrow for a drop down menu of output styles and select the style you want. Always check with your lecturer for the preferred departmental style

44 We will stay with Harvard, British standard

45 Click on the arrow beside choose a folder and then select plantation

46 Now click on Create Bibliography

47 Here are the Plantation references in the Harvard referencing style. You can add and delete references from the folder. You can also change the referencing style at any time.
