4 The Antislavery Movement Abolitionist: someone who joined the movement to abolish or end slavery. – Included Northerners & Southerners whites & free blacks men & women – wrote pamphlets & spoke against slavery

5 Leading Abolitionists William Lloyd Garrison – began an antislavery newspaper. (The Liberator) Fredrick Douglass – Escaped from slavery – Spoke to white people about slavery Sojourner Truth – Spoke about slavery and womens rights Sarah and Angelina Grimke: – daughters of a slave owner in S. Carolina spoke out against slavery.

6 Free Blacks 500,000 free blacks by 1860 Discrimination: unfair treatment of particular groups. – African Americans faced discriminated in N. & S. American Anti-Slavery Society – Created 1833 by free blacks & whites Wanted slavery to end immediately

7 The Underground Railroad Abolitionists working in secret to help slaves escape to freedom Runaways headed to – Northern states – Canada – Florida – Caribbean islands

8 Stations and Conductors Free blacks – gave most of the money and supplies food, clothes, and medical aid – did most of the work Harriet Tubman- – Most famous conductor

9 Lesson Summary Abolitionists worked to end slavery. Free blacks & women played the biggest role in freeing slaves. The Underground Railroad helped to free many slaves.
