I’m Georgiana’s mom! Hi! I’m Ms. Marshall. Ecosystems Biomes Habitats Regions Hey there! I’m Georgiana. And I’m Georgiana's dad!

Ms. Marshall addresses her students near the end of their science research project unit…. Class, remember your science projects are due after vacation. But I’m going on a road trip for vacation. Ecosystems Biomes Habitats Regions

All I have to do is get some artifacts to help make a display. Ecosystems Biomes Habitats Regions Why don’t you collect those artifacts on your trip. Work on my vacation? Well, Georgiana, you’ve already done all the research and have your outline for the regions of Georgia, right?

Ecosystems Biomes Habitats Regions What’s a scavenger hunt? I’ll talk to your parents and we’ll make it fun! Like a scavenger hunt!

Ecosystems Biomes Habitats Regions Ok! So where ever you send me, maybe I can pick up things for my project’s display. I’ll give you clues to open one at a time. Each clue will tell you where to go next.

Georgiana packed her things with her parents and headed out for their trip in the family car. They were ready for the first clue… So, Georgiana, what’s the first clue? I think Ms. Marshall had a great idea to let your project guide our vacation!

After you read each clue, see if you can figure out where Ms. Marshall is sending Georgiana before you read the next page. Hello Georgiana! I know you are dying to know where you are going to go. After you finish visiting each place, I will give you another clue. You will have to solve the clue to find out where you are going next! Here is your first clue. To know where to go, you won’t have to look very far. The land will be somewhat hilly or flat and made of sandy clay. You may even spot a white tail deer meandering through the longleaf pines.

Oh, the first clue is easy! I think we’re already there, Dad. It’s the Coastal Plains. Georgiana and her family live in Americus, GA which is found in the Coastal Plains region…

Before they left Sumter County, Georgiana and her family took a swim in Lake Blackshear. I found a pine cone and took a picture of a rabbit hopping across the bank. I also have a flint rock in my pocket. What’s next?

Woo hoo! Here is clue #2: Head north to a land of many trees and the home of our state bird, the brown thrasher. The forest will be thick with walnut, oak, peach, and pecan trees.

Georgiana and her family traveled on Highway 19 to the Piedmont region… This Piedmont region was full of tasty treats. I ate a peach and have the pit in my bag. I gathered pecans and walnuts for Ms. Marshall, too. That’s a really neat peacock feather you found.

You can see all of the Piedmont region from the top of Stone Mountain. And you’ll have that piece of granite as a souvenir to remember this part of the trip. After a drive by the cypress trees and a picnic in the Woody Piedmont park, Georgiana and her family head to Stone Mountain…

So, Georgiana, how many regions did you study? There are 5 regions in Georgia. We’ve been to 2. There are three more!! Georgiana opens the next clue…

Yipee! It’s clue #3: Put on your hiking boots for this next region. Beware of the mountain lions hiding between the evergreens! Be sure you pick some dandelions, buttercups, and mountain laurel for your mom.

Brass Town Bald And these wild flowers are beautiful. I love the Queen Anne’s Lace and Indian Paintbrush. These mountains are cool!

Look out the window! Georgiana and her family continued to see boulders and waterfalls in the distance as they drove through the valley. I see a mountain goat walking the cliff. I see a fox chasing a chipmunk.

Georgiana found a skin from a rattle snake that had molted. She also collected pine needles from the evergreens and a large chunk of quartz…. Ewwww…a snake skin!

Ready for more? Now for clue #4: The next region is a little salty. Bring your scuba gear, so you can see the dolphins, right whales, and logger head turtles.

Georgiana realized she was headed for the ocean so she got out her bathing suit. When her family reached the Atlantic Coast… Eewww….there’s seaweed on my foot.

Georgiana collected shells and the sand from her flips flops and bathing suit!

The Atlantic Coast was my favorite region so far. Did you see the crab crawl across my towel? I enjoyed fishing for shrimp and oysters. Where to now? Yes! And the right whale and dolphin were awesome.

Look alive! Here is clue #5: You may still get a little wet in this next region. Be on the look out for alligators, black bears, water moccasins, and other snakes. Check out the awesome carnivorous plants that live here, like the pitcher plant.

I think Ms. Marshall is sending us to the Okefenokee Swamp. I remember learning about that in class.

Georgiana sees many cold blooded reptiles lurking in the swamp. She hears them bellow, too.

This peat moss and water lily from the swamp are cool! I’m going to put them with the other souvenirs I’ve collected. I’m glad we didn’t get chased by a bear!

Boy, I sure am tired of all this traveling!! These 5 regions of Georgia really wore me out! Can we go home yet? One more clue! Let’s see what it is!

Oh boo hoo. It’s the very last clue: Just follow a rabbit to this next place. Here you will find the Flint River and Lake Blackshear.

Home at last!

You can see the trip we took, from the Coastal Plains to the Piedmont to the Mountains to the Atlantic Coast to the Swamp, and then we came back home.
