AWIPS II Update Shannon White

AWIPS I Status Due to the AWIPS II transition, only critical bug fixes have been deployed in the last year With the delay in AWIPS II, the need to deploy minimal new functionality has been noted The once-a-month 9.2.x paradigm will be replaced by an every-other-month release beginning in March 2011 with OB9.3 –These releases could contain new functionality, especially if the heavy lifting has been done
3
AWIPS II AWIPS II testing continues, both at field sites and organized FITs –15 th test in two weeks Have done some marine testing but still have holes, particularly in the tropical arena Local application migration continues –Missing/broken functionality, changing architecture and lack of documentation still standing in the way of much of that work
4
New Schedule Missed May milestone for entering system test due to several of the entrance criteria not being met –Installing at RHQ and doing more intensive testing at existing testbeds Likely will enter system test in January Field test is scheduled to begin end of May –Comprised of the sites who are currently testing Operational deployment scheduled before the end of FY11

The following statements do not represent the opinion of NWS management or Raytheon

Where Are We Really? Current testing continues to find significant issues System stability and performance is problematic –Much better than last year, but still not close to what field needs Local offices are developing documentation/how- to site Still do not have all AWIPS I functionality working –When all GFE, FFMP, FSI, etc. works, will likely find new issues Adding risk by tasking Raytheon with additional jobs, such as providing training, even though most software milestones have not been met
7
What You Can Do Encourage participation in local or organized testing –Continue to need marine/tropical expertise Catalogue everything, big and small, in testing Be vocal about your experiences –Now is not the time to sugarcoat; we are too close to field deployment It will be up to the field (WFOs/RFCs/NCs), and hopefully regions, to ensure a workable AWIPS II is fielded
