4 Great Barrier Reef Large coral reef off northeastern coast of Australia Fragile ecosystem which has diminished as of late

5 Antarctica 5 th largest continent Mostly covered by glaciers, but contains plains and mountains Unlike North Pole, South Pole is found on land

7 Australia climate Much of the continent is either desert or arid Desert area is called the Outback One of the most isolated places on earth

8 Antarctic climate Entire continent is arctic, but some areas have been warmer than others Ozone depletion and global climate change are some factors

9 Oceania climate Many areas are tropical, New Zealand is more temperate

10 Oceania colonization Pacific islands were populated by prehistoric people During 1500s European traders explored the area Missionaries brought Christianity Diseases spread to native populations

11 Colonization By early 1900s, Europe and the U.S. began taking control During WWII, the Japanese Empire broke down from U.S. island hopping campaign

13 Australia Aboriginal people settled in Australia about 40,000 years ago Many of the same teachings are practiced today

15 Aboriginal Discrimination Aborigines were treated much like our Native Americans and African Americans from European colonization to mid 1900s Land was taken Were not granted citizenship Aborigines were forced to assimilate Stolen (Lost) Generation

16 Problems today for Aborigines Many are unemployed or suffer from substance abuse Still trying to claim parts of land they hold sacred

23 Book assignment This assignment, along with yesterdays, will count as 1 grade. Complete p. 723 #1-4 (#4 should be in a paragraph) Also do p. 725 Geographic Skills #1-3 using complete sentences.
