NOHFC current annual budget is $100 million. The mandate of NOHFC is to partner with northerners to create jobs and strengthen the northern economy. Together with its northern partners, the NOHFC is: exploring new innovations in emerging technologies mobilizing motivated entrepreneurs providing exciting career opportunities for northern youth forging strong private and public sector partnerships enhancing the vital infrastructure that makes Northern Ontario a vibrant place to live and work encouraging innovative solutions to alternative renewable energy generation

4 Prepared September 2010 Jennifer van der Valk – NOHFC Marketing 4 Enterprises North Job Creation New and existing enterprises in eligible sectors that will create jobs in Northern Ontario Capital construction costs, leasehold improvements, purchase of new or used equipment/machinery, staff training, marketing, land servicing and intellectual capital that results in job creation in Northern Ontario. Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation assistance to any one project generally will not exceed 50 % of eligible capital costs up to $1 million. Contact centre located in Thunder Bay NOHFC provided $675,918 in support towards total project costs of $1.6 million 250 new jobs created

The private sector component is a combination of conditional contributions and repayable loans. Public Sector Emerging Technology Generally, up to 50% for capital projects in the form of conditional contributions, forgivable performance loans and repayable loans normally not to exceed $1 million. Private Sector Emerging Technology Generally, up to 50% for capital projects normally not to exceed $1 million. Also, the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation may provide up to $100,000 non- repayable contributions for research and developmental technical projects. Funding Types of Assistance

10 Prepared September 2010 Jennifer van der Valk – NOHFC Marketing 10 NOHFC Projects – Em Tech Information & Communication Technology Projects Cellular and broadband infrastructure projects across Northern Ontario NOHFC has provided over $40.8 million in support to 27 projects with an aggregate cost of $184.4 million Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre / Phillips Medical Systems Canada Establishment of a Molecular Medicine Research Centre aimed at attracting, over a 5 year period, key research professionals and staff to the region and kick-starting a life sciences research cluster. NOHFC provided $5 M in support toward total project costs of $44 M

12 Prepared September 2010 Jennifer van der Valk – NOHFC Marketing 12 Infrastructure and Community Development Program Municipalities, First Nations, not-for-profit corporations and educational institutions may apply individually or in partnership with businesses and other government-related agencies. This program will assist in the provision of essential and strategic community infrastructure necessary for the creation of jobs in Northern Ontario. Conditional contributions, forgivable performance loans and repayable loans. Infrastructure Projects Funding generally not to exceed 50% for capital projects up to a maximum of $1 million. 14 Prepared September 2010 Jennifer van der Valk – NOHFC Marketing 14 Application Process for NOHFC Programs Two stage application process Applications are initially reviewed for eligibility by the NOHFC Program Staff based on the published program guidelines and program policy. All applicants receive a written response from the NOHFC regarding eligibility. If eligible, next steps will be outlined in the correspondence. Eligible private sector applications are evaluated by NOHFC’s due diligence provider (Deloitte & Touche). Eligible public sector applications are evaluated by the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry. NOHFC Committees review the evaluations and make recommendations to the Board. The NOHFC Board makes the final decision regarding NOHFC approvals.

16 Prepared September 2010 Jennifer van der Valk – NOHFC Marketing 16 Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Results Since October 2003 through March 2011 The NOHFC has assisted 3,831 projects. The NOHFC has approved more than $649 million in funding. The NOHFC has leveraged more than $2 billion from other project partners. The NOHFC has helped to create or sustain 15,856 jobs and over 470 co-op positions.
