1996 – 2013 Retail Survey Where are Morro Bay residents shopping around San Luis Obispo County? The following appraisal is from 1995 & 2013 resident retail surveys. While our shopping trips to City of SLO have remained about the same, we are shopping less in Morro Bay then we did 18 years ago. This may be due to growth in online shopping and development of other retail outlets around San Luis Obispo County. Morro Bay 36% City of SLO 47% Total Retail Shopping Trips - 1995 Morro Bay 27% City of SLO 48% Total Retail Shopping Trips - 2013
11
City of San Luis Obispo is the location of choice for much retail selection. We are shopping more in SLO for home improvements, electronics, and groceries. Conversely, we are shopping 20% less for clothing and furniture in City of SLO then we did 18 years ago. Where are we shopping for clothes and furniture if not in City of SLO?
12
City of Santa Maria has lost out in terms of our residents shift in retail habits. Since 1995, A-town and Pismo Outlets have swayed our residents away from making shopping trips down into City of Santa Maria, Santa Barbara County. New big box outlets in City of SLO, A-Town and elsewhere are seeming to supply our residents with more of what we want to purchase. Santa Maria is still a popular place for Morro Bay residents to buy cars!
13
1995 mail order catalogues are compared to 2013 internet shopping. Interesting are the new categories of online purchases. In 1995, people only seemed buy cloths, department store items and gift through mail order. Now, 2013 just about every category has grown, including medical and electronic equip.
