NEED: Why art? “The arts offer a way of thinking unavailable in other disciplines.” (Harvard Project Zero 2001) Art was deemed one of the core subjects to be taught in schools. (GOALS 2000: Educate America Act) Art can supplement, if not surpass, the spoken word as a medium of communication. (International Child Art Foundation 2001)
4
NEED: Absence of Art Importance of art is marginalized in education. –“None of the arts standards was rated as ‘necessary’ or ‘probably necessary’ to learn prior to high school graduation.” (Chapman 2000) –Viewed as an extracurricular activity (Davis 1999) Teachers are not trained to teach art. Funding for art education is lacking.
