Dc regulated power supply SKN

Introduction All electronic circuits need DC power supply either from battery or power pack units. Many electronic equipment contain circuits which convert the AC supply voltage into DC Voltage at the required level. The unit containing these circuits is called the Linear Mode Power Supply (LPS).

Difference between regulated and non regulated power supply? Regulated supply means the Voltage will stay constant irrespective of the load. Unregulated supplies tend to have higher outputs than stated and are normally used with equipment that has it's own internal regulation circuitry. Using Voltages higher than recommended for a particular piece of equipment may cause permanent damage.

Dual supplies Some electronic circuits require a power supply with positive and negative outputs as well as zero volts (0V). This is called a 'dual supply' because it is like two ordinary supplies connected together

principle Transformer- steps down high voltage AC mains to low voltage AC. Transformer Rectifier - converts AC to DC, but the DC output is varying. Rectifier Smoothing - smoothes the DC from varying greatly to a small ripple. Smoothing Regulator - eliminates ripple by setting DC output to a fixed voltage. Regulator

Key components Transformer rectifier Smoothing Regulator

Transformer It converts ac electricity from one voltage to another with little loss of power step-down transformer is used to reduce the high mains voltage (230V ) to a safer low voltage

rectifier The bridge rectifier is the most important and it produces full-wave varying dc

single diode rectifier A single diode can be used as a rectifier but this produces half-wave varying DC

smoothing Smoothing is performed by a large value electrolytic capacitor. Smoothing is not perfect due to the capacitor voltage falling a little as it discharges, giving a small ripple voltage

regulator Voltage regulator ICs are available with fixed (typically 5, 12 and 15V) or variable output voltages Negative voltage regulators are available, mainly for use in dual supplies. Most regulators include some automatic protection from excessive current ('overload protection') and overheating ('thermal protection').

zener diode regulator For low current power supplies a simple voltage regulator can be made with a resistor and a zener diode connected in reverse It is a shunt regulator and operates by way of the zener diode's action

application It is used for providing power supply to lab equipment

disadvantages For different output voltages different values of components are required
