Department of Law and Citizenship Welcome from Dr Peter Jepson

Please be quiet in the Lecture … Turn off Mobiles If you wish - take Notes Please feel free to raise your hand if you have a question.

AS Citizenship I hate the title … Citizens’ Rights is about … ‘Freedom with responsibility’

It involves Civil Liberties Freedom of expression Freedom from discrimination A right to life A right to welfare A right to participate in government European Convention on Human Rights

Strode’s Approach to Citizenship Most AS subjects involve FIVE HOURS per week of classes In addition, for every hour in class you are expected to do at least an hour’s work outside of class Citizenship is different …

Strode’s Approach to Citizenship Citizenship is delivered to every student – in a limited form – in Tutorial Classes If you study Law, Politics or Sociology you will find Citizenship elements are included in the lesson materials

Strode’s Approach to Citizenship Accordingly, if you study Law, Politics and/or Sociology you will be expected/encouraged to also do Citizenship However it is NOT an additional five hours of classes per week.

Strode’s Approach to Citizenship Consistent with examination requirements we split Citizenship into three distinct elements. (1) Political Citizenship – A one hour class per week. (2) Sociology Citizenship – A one hour class per week. (3) Law Citizenship – Just a one hour class per week.

AS Citizenship An AS qualification which is respected by Employers and Universities. It MAKES SENSE to do AS Citizenship if you are doing Law because of the overlap. Likewise, it also makes sense if you are doing Politics or Sociology. We have speakers, maybe an odd visit to a Court etc – we have fun!
