Prokaryotic Cells
4
Prokaryotes – Two types Bacteria Found everywhere on earth Some bacteria can make you sick ▫ Streptococcus - Strep throat Some bacteria are used to make food ▫ Lactobacillus - cheese, yogurt, and sauerkraut
5
Archaea ▫ First found living in extreme environments Thermal vents, and volcanic hot springs ▫ Have now been found to live in many different environments In the ocean, soil, fresh water, and others
6
Parts of a Prokaryotic Cell Cell Wall Plasma Membrane Cytoplasm Ribosomes Nucleoid Flagella
7
Cell Wall Tough but flexible outside layer of a prokaryotic cell Helps give prokaryotes structure Cell Wall (yellow)
8
Plasma Membrane (Green) Plasma Membrane A flexible membrane that sits below the cell wall Selectively permeable Important in “talking” with other cells
9
Cytoplasm The gel like fluid inside a cell Made up mostly of water Important for the movement of molecules inside the cell Cytoplasm
10
Ribosomes Make proteins. Proteins are responsible for many different jobs inside of cells. Ribosomes
11
Nucleoid The Nucleoid is the region of DNA in a prokaryotic cell It is not surrounded by a membrane The DNA is free floating in the cytoplasm Nucleoid
12
Flagella Helps the prokaryote to move Also helps the prokaryote to sense temperatures and chemicals in its environment Flagella
