Electronic Resource Management and Access Services: A New Generation NMLA/MPLA 2007 March 15, 2007 Presented by Dodie Ownes djownes@ix.netcom.com
2
Overview In this session, various independent electronic resource management systems (ERMS) for library use will be discussed. Focus will be on examining the efficiency of the ERMS in integrating and streamlining the multi-step processes librarians encounter when navigating searches between print and electronic documents, as well the ERMS as the knowledgebase for the library. Statistical packages, benchmark reporting and license management options will also be reviewed. A new category of library services, ERAMS, will also be discussed.
3
To Buy or To Build? It is a question of where to put your resources Tri-College Library Consortium (PA) 2002 – ERTS; 2005 – Verify (VTLS); 2007 - ? Marist College/U of Illinois-Chicago 2003 – combo ILS/Access/SFX; 2006 – Serials Solutions ERMS University of Nevada – Reno 2002 – Excel, SFX; 2006 - III ERM Oregon Health Sciences University 2002 – 856, SQL/Coldfusion; 2004 - III ERM And many others – UCLA, Marist College, etc … BUT …. NCSU still supporting own E- Matrix solution, Penn State ERLIC, etc.

Electronic Resource Management Systems Overview Efficiency of the ERMS in integrating and streamlining ERMS as the knowledgebase ERMS vendors Statistical packages, benchmark reporting and license management options ERAMS – the next wave?
5
ERMS Efficiencies Staff time, energy, purpose Consolidation of applications Resource intensive Centralization of e-resource information Off-site hosting SaaS – Software as a Service Immediate access to usage and cost data
6
The 39 FTE positions on the left represent those working on print acquisitions. The 7.5 FTE positions on the right represent those working on e-resource deployment. To put this in context, the print/electronic split in their budget is 60% print/40% electronic. The Evolution of a New World Order: How and Why UCLA Drew the Line between P and E - Sharon Farb, Andrew Stancliffe, and Angela Riggio, presented at ER&L 2007.
7
ERMS as the Knowledgebase A store of knowledge about a domain represented in machine-processable form, which may be rules (in which case the knowledge base may be considered a rule base), facts, or other representations. (www.ichnet.org/glossary.htm). Link-resolver vendors, AtoZ list vendors and ERMS vendors often maintain a knowledge base of information about serial versions, including such information as links to content, coverage information, and administrative and descriptive metadata. Each local implementation of a system may use those portions of the global knowledge base that represent the holdings of the implementing organization. Statistical packages, benchmark reporting, license management options, reporting abilities Usage statistics on number and time of access to each e-resource Compare local resource use to that of peer institutions Track e-journal searching behavior Click-through statistics Overlap analysis Contract, copyright and license detail management and notification Outage reports

ERAMS* – the new wave? A new category in the library marketplace that includes: Metasearch Knowledgebase Electronic resource management A-Z lists Reporting and management tools Link resolvers *Electronic Resource Access and Management Services
12
No print resources need apply … Four processes central to ERAMS Collect – create a comprehensive knowledgebase for electronic resources Correct – ensure accuracy and currency of the knowledgebase Connect – user facing – get readers to resources quickly, efficiently, easily Control – manage and maximize resources (people and $$), improve acquisition process, optimize usage of electronic content
