A Little Socialist Review. Go ahead and get out yesterday’s class handout on socialism. Take the practice quiz, then read the Marx handout and briefly answer the followup questions. Quiet time—we’ll have you work together later.

While you’re doing that, a little German Romanticism… Beethoven, Sixth Symphony (“Pastorale”)

AP Euro Today Outcomes: How do we see Romanticism in our culture and in Germany’s? What are some key German Romantic ideas? HW:Begin HW: 766-70: Romanticism

Agenda 1.I want to take a few moments to have you apply what you know about Romanticism based on more modern popular culture. See that back page of the “quiz” and Marx handout. 2.The second part of class, you’ll work with a partner focusing exclusively on German Romanticism. First, take a look at the back page of today’s handout.

The first great American Romantic novel Was Last of the Mohicans, which contrasted the corruption of “civilization” with the place where man was at his best—in nature. The film, with Daniel- Day Lewis, is superb.

But Cooper was an American. What does German Romanticism have to do with me? Why are we studying this stuff? This film clip comes from a book written by Felix Salten—an Austrian, or, culturally, a German. DON’T tell me German Romanticism has nothing to do with YOU!

I hate that scene.

Question: Who is the villain in Bambi—”he” also starts a forest fire? Why are those acts by Man so reprehensible to a Romantic?

I think this scene, from 1962, is one of the finest Romantic scenes in film history. What does it say about our place in the natural world?

Remember how we talked about the Romantic hero the first day? Romantic heroes... Prefer living in nature to living in civilization Don’t like rules, but have a strong personal moral code Defend the weak from the powerful and greedy. All of those are attributes of…

Well, who else? The ideal Romantic Hero has to be…

Romantic Westerns seemed especially important to the “Baby Boom” generation—who grew up during the Cold War.

The Old West appeal extends even into adulthood. These are Old West reenactors.

Oh, did I mention…? Those reenactors are all Germans?

The Old West is a passion among many Germans… Because its heroes are so recognizable to them—they are ideal Romantic heroes.

So, there seems to be some kind of similarity… Between German and American Romanticism. Both see the natural world as a powerful, majestic place where humans are relatively puny. Both value the Romantic hero.

Your job today: Use “Richard Cory” to understand sturm und drang.Use “Richard Cory” to understand sturm und drang. In a few moments, I’ll see what you’ve learned. In a few moments, I’ll see what you’ve learned.

A few German Romantic- type questions…

There are two messages about Richard Cory… One: We can’t ever know what’s in someone’s heart. Two: I think part of what killed Cory was a lack of sturm und drang. What would I mean by that?

That’s one thing I really admire about German Romanticism. Failure is an option. We struggle. We fail. We are hurt. …and these things make us human.

Why would Americans hate Hegel’s idea of “freedom?”

The Portuguese Man o’ War …is not one organism, but is instead a colony of organisms—polyps and tentacles. How is this similar to volkgeist and weltgeist?

Why is he dressed like this?

Hitler’s obvious—but what does this guy have to do with America during the Cold War? Why were westerns so popular among Americans?
