Copyright 2006 Thomson Corporation 2 A very brief history of the citation index The concept of the citation index was first developed by Dr Eugene Garfield and his concept was published in an article in the Journal Science in 1955 In the 1961 Dr Garfield created a Genetics Citation Index at the request of the National Institute of Health. As a consequence of this project Dr Garfield was able to start the product of a multi- disciplinary Science Citation Index (SCI) in 1963. SCI Print

Copyright 2006 Thomson Corporation 3 The Science Citation Index was born and over the years developed from print in the 1960’s, On-line with Dialog in the 1970’s, CD-ROM in the 1980’s and finally a web interface in 1997 At the same time the content was enhanced and the Social Sciences Citation Index was released in 1973 covering journals from 1956, the Arts & Humanities Citation Index was released in 1978 covering journals from 1975 and the Century of Science in 2004 covering science journals back to 1900. Copyright 2006 Thomson Corporation 12 A closer look: Journal Selection Process Why be selective? –Economically impractical to cover everything –Analysis of citation data has shown that a core of 2,000 journals account for about 85% of all that is published and 95% of what is cited. –However this core is not static, and additional journals must be included. Thomson Scientific covers this expanded core of journals and enhances it with coverage of hot disciplines that may become main-stream in the future. Additional journals are indexed to provide a broad and even distribution of data across all disciplines and geographic regions.
