Ethnic Groups Race and Ethnicity Unit

Opener  Can you tell this person’s ethnicity just by looking at them. If Yes, what clues did you use to make that determination?

Ethnic Group  People who share, believe they share, or are believed by others to share a national origin; a common ancestry; a place of birth; or distinctive social traits. Religion, Style of Dress, or language Sets them apart from other ethnic groups

Ethnic Determination  Too many groups to define  Who specifies the unique characteristics  What are the unique characteristics  Self-Identification? Ranges from nonexistent to all encompassing

Ethnic Determination WWays people self-identify Ancestors (great-grandfather came from Ireland) Distinct community (Grew up in American Samoa) Identify with a particular group (Sports Teams) Complete lifestyle (born in a particular place, speak a certain language, specialized dress, and only interacting with people of the ethnic group)

Ethnic determination  Selective forgetting: process in which people forget, dismiss, or fail to pass a connection to one or more ethnicities. Affected by larger societal factors  Example: Americans classified as white have a great deal of trouble claiming an ethnicity that is associated with races that are non-white

Experiment  Job applicants with African-American-sounding names are far less likely to get a callback than are similarly qualified "white" candidates, according to researchers at the University of Chicago and MIT, who submitted 5,000 bogus resumes in response to job ads. Half the resumes bore stereotypical African- American names such as Latonya and Tyrone; half sported traditionally Anglo names like Kristin and Brad.

Results  Candidates with Caucasian-sounding names were contacted more frequently than those with a presumed ethnic identity and identical resume. That is, 10 percent of those with typically white names were called back, compared to just 6.7 percent with black-sounding names. Some names may be especially unpalatable for employers: Tamika was called back 5 percent of the time; Aisha, a scant 2 percent.

Involuntary Ethnicity  Situation where a dominant group or government creates an umbrella ethnic category and assigns people from many different cultures and countries to it Example: Hispanic includes anyone who has roots in a Spanish-speaking country (19 countries)

Ethnic Renewal  Process in which a person takes it upon themselves to find, learn about, and claim an ethnic heritage Example: an adopted child identifies with the ethnic group of their biological parents

Max Weber  “The whole concept of ethnic groups is so complex and so vague that it might be good to abandon it all together.”  -Sociologist now try to answer the question why is so much importance placed on ethnicity?

Dominant Group Ethnic Identity  Most advantaged ethnic group in the society Possesses the greatest access to resources Power to create and maintain the system that creates advantages

Dominant Ethnic Group Least likely to identify with an ethnic group Least likely to recall incidents of prejudice, discrimination, or disadvantage because of ethnicity or race EEthnicity is insignificant in their lives, so they do not have on. DDominant: overrepresentation in society

Hidden Ethnicity  A sense of self that is based on no awareness of an ethnic identity because its culture is considered normal, normative, or mainstream.  Normalization makes it hard for other ethnic groups to challenge the rules
