Aerospace Education Aerospace Education History – CAP & AE 1941 – created; used aviation 1946 – Congress chartered DAP -educate, aerospace supremacy 1948 – USAF Auxiliary – promote AE 1953 – CAP turned to school systems Today – still actively involved in AE & protecting national security
4
Aerospace Education Aerospace Education Importance of AE US relies on strong aerospace power -For national security -Boosts economic prosperity --industry contributes 15% GNP --800 million fly commercially every year --150 million fly general aviation annually Enhances quality of life
5
Aerospace Education Aerospace Education Workforce & Education Challenges Graying of AE industry Other countries producing more scientists & engineers American schools not producing enough STEM majors 69% math & 57% science middle school teachers -No major or certification in subject 50% teachers leave profession within 5 years
6
Aerospace Education Aerospace Education Recent Initiatives Presidents’ commissions -increased spending & added jobs Lots of government & industry emphasis NSTA endorsement Problems still exist CAP Makes a Difference!
7
Aerospace Education CAP’s Role AE Mission -Promote AE to members & general public -Encourage exploration of AE/STEM careers How do we do that? -Contact with over --26,000 cadets --35,000 adults --150,000 students
