2 Solving Disputes Conflict is inevitable - how do we handle conflict? Courts - disadvantages - expensive, can make problem worse (divorce) Other ways to handle conflict? 1. Negotiation - sit down and talk to each other, and try to reach an acceptable solution Informal - parents, teachers Formal - hire a professional - auto accident Settlement - agreement before the case gets to court

3 Solving Disputes 2. Arbitration - agree to have another person listen to arguments and make a decision for them (like a judge) The decision is final - unless it is non- binding arbitration Labor disputes - union and employer 3. Mediation - 3rd party helps bring the other 2 parties together to settle disputes Neutral 3rd party - voluntary and nonbinding Married couples, tenants, etc.

4 Mediation BBB - Better Business Bureau helps settle disputes OMBUDSPERSONS - investigate complaints and help parties reach an agreement - common in Gov. and Univ. - schools - peer fighting
