9 American Heritage & People… A Century Ago Activity: In this activity you will research what it would be like if you lived in 1902, instead of 2002. You will write a biography of your life as it would have been 100 years ago. Using the website below, you will describe for me your job, what type of house you have, what types of clothes you wear, etc. Remember, if it was not around in 1902, you cannot put it on your biography. 100 years ago

10 People in Societies… Natives of Ohio Activity : Using the link to the Living Ohio government series, research at least two famous people in history from the Dayton area. 11 People In Societies…. Ohio Culture Activity: Use the link below to go to Site Safari. Once there, click on History Sites. You are to pick one of the sites below and either write to them at the address listed or call them using the phone number listed. Once you contact them, ask them to send as much information about their historical site as they can, then bring it to class Ohio Kids Activity: Visit the site below and visit the different links it contains. 12 People in Societies… Civil War Activity: Look up information on the Worldwide Web about the Civil War. Use that information to construct a “letter home” from a major battle in the War. Pretend you are a soldier in the war that has just gone through one of the major battles of the War (you choose which side you are on and what battle you fought in). Describe the battle to your family, as well as the war in general. American Civil War Site

13 World Interactions… Geography Activity: Use the link below to travel to any one of the 50 states. Once there, write down at least ten important facts about that state. 14 World Interactions… Map skills Activity: Choose an area of the world off of the list provided by this Website. Once the compete map comes up, draw it as best you can. 15 World Interactions… The Weather Activity: Investigate the weather patterns of North America, or look at the weather patterns of Ohio. Use the site below to gather information on the averages of weather in whatever area of the continent you choose. When you get to the site, make sure you click on the “Climate and Weather” link. 16 Citizenship Rights and Responsibilities Government Offices Activity: Go to the White House homepage and email the President of Vice-President. In your message tell him who you are and talk to him about one thing in your life that you would like to see him take an interest in. Make sure to print out the email before you send it, bring the copy of it in to me. The White House Activity: Go to the Ohio General Assembly homepage and email your state representative (you will need to find out who represents your district). 17 Citizenship Rights and Responsibilities Voting Activity: Read about the issues that are important in elections and decide which political parties you agree with more. Also, print out a list of which candidates represent you in government, both in the state of Ohio and the Federal government. Candidates and Voting Activity: Use this site to find out how your representatives in the Government voted on key issues. Write down on a separate sheet of paper who the candidate was, what the issue was and how he or she voted on it. Voting Issues

18 Citizenship Rights and Responsibilities Civic responsibility Activity: Set up a pen-pal system with another student or another class close to your age group. Use this pen-pal as a way to discuss civic duties and government issues that affect both parties. Education Pen-Pals

19 Democratic Processes… State Legislation Activity: Look up the differences between each state’s legislation. Compare some of Ohio’s laws with that of another state (whichever state you choose). State Government Legislation Activity: Review lawsuits that have been presented on this site and have yet to be ruled on. Remember, these are actual people. 20 Democratic Processes… Courts of Law Activity: review at least three Supreme Court decisions. Read both the majority and the minority opinion. Decide whether you agree with the final ruling or not. Supreme Court

21 Democratic Processes… Congress Activity: Contact both United States Senators from Ohio about an issue that you feel strongly about. Use email, phone, or traditional level. After you get a response, bring it in to share with the class. U.S. Senate Activity: Find out who your U.S. Representative is and contact him or her as well. 22 Decision Making and Resources… Economics Activity: Use the website to run your own lemonade stand. Decide how much lemonade to make each day, how much to sell it for and see what kind of profit you can make.
