Math – Chapter 8

Lesson 1 – Understanding Length and Height Length – how long something is from one end to the other Height – distance from the bottom of something to the top

Lesson 2 – Inches and Feet In old times people used fingers and feet to measure length and height. Inch comes from the distance from the tip of a persons thumb to the first joint. Guess where foot comes from! Inch (in.) – a small unit of measure Foot (ft.) – a unit of measure equal to 12 inches

Lesson 3 – Inches, Feet, and Yards Yard (yd.) – a unit of measure equal to 3 feet or 36 inches

Lesson 4 – Problem Solving Guess and check – measure a path that is not straight

Lesson 5 – Centimeters and Meters Centimeter (cm) – small unit of measure, about the width of a childs index finger Meter (m) – unit of measure equal to 100 centimeters 1 foot is approximately 30 ½ cm. 1 yard is approximately 90 ½ cm – almost a meter

Lesson 6 – Understanding Weight Weight is how heavy something is

Lesson 7 – Pounds We will be estimating and measuring weight using pounds. Pound (lb)

Lesson 8 – Grams and Kilograms Gram (g) is a small unit of measure. A paper clip weighs about 1 gram. Kilogram (kg) is a unit of measure equal to 1000 grams. A hammer weighs about 1 kg.

Lesson 9 – Understanding Capacity Capacity is how much something can hold

Lesson 10 – Cups, Pints, and Quarts Cup – unit of measure Pint – unit of measure equal to 2 cups Quart - unit of measure equal to 2 pints or 4 cups

Lesson 11 – Liters Liter (L) – a unit of measure that tells how much something holds. Pop usually comes in 2-liter bottles.

Lesson 12 – Temperature Temperature measures how hot or cold something is. We can read temperature in Fahrenheit or Celsius degrees.

Lesson 13 – Problem-Solving Application Children will choose the appropriate tool for measuring and the appropriate unit of measure. A ruler measures the length of something A cup measures how much something can hold A scale measures how heavy something is A thermometer measures how hot or cold something is
