3 Recap A system is a set of components that work together to achieve a goal, by accepting inputs and producing outputs in an organized way An information system is a combination of hardware, software, network and personnel, organized to use data and produce information to facilitate planning, control, coordination, and decision making in an organization

4 IS Supports Business Processes An information system (IS) supports the business processes of each department in an organization. Business process = a collection of related, structured activities or tasks that produce a specific service or product or serve a particular goal for a particular business unit. wikipedia

6 Operational-level – Elementary activities and routine transactions – Data current and accurate Knowledge-level – Support knowledge and data workers – Integrate new knowledge into the business IS at Organizational Level

7 Management-level – Periodic monitoring, control, decision-making and administration – Is the business working well? Strategic-level – Long-term (e.g. 5 year) planning and strategy – Internal and external information
