1 Education Accelerator Related Educational Programs at Fermilab Eric Prebys and Mike Syphers* This program was started in 1985 by Leon Lederman to address a shortfall in advanced education related to accelerators. The program is open to students enrolled in good standing in an accredited PhD program, who have completed their coursework and any required candidacy exams. Each student works with an adviser at Fermilab, as well as an adviser at his or her home institution, from which the PhD is officially awarded. The program pays the cost to support the student while enrolled in the program, including tuition and stipend. In addition, students will normally attend one or more classes at the US Particle Accelerator School (USPAS) while they are enrolled. Generally, about 10 students are enrolled in the program, working on diverse projects related to accelerator physics or related technologies (RF, instrumentation, cryogenics, etc). T. It is a 10 week summer program, patterned after the DOE SULI internship, which also includes 2 weeks at the US Particle Accelerator School. The program has just completed its second year. It is open to US or foreign students enrolled at US universities, majoring in Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, or Computer Science. Juniors or outstanding Sophomores are considered. Successful candidates work with a mentor on a predetermined project in accelerator science or related technology. At the end, each student gives a short presentation and writes a paper summarizing his or her work. Interns receive a weekly stipend, housing and round trip transportation to Chicago. In addition, the program pays the cost of attending the USPAS.
