Red symbolizes Hardiness and Valor
White symbolized Purity and Innocence
The stripes:
13 horizontal stripes,
seven red alternating
with 6 white.
The stars:
50 stars - 1 star for
each state in the

3. My First Look
Established on June 14, 1777 by the Continental Congress.
The first Flag Act resolved that the flag be made of 13 stripes, alternating red and white, and one star for each of the 13 states.
The stars were white on a blue field, representing a new Constellation.

4. My History
George Washington asked Elizabeth (Betsy) Ross to sew the first U.S. flag.
George Washington drew a picture of the flag he wanted her to sew.
She sewed it in 1776.
