1. CAHSEE: Writing Workshop A.) Activity #1 Directions: You are going to take notes and then answer questions. ***Good writers write paragraphs using topic sentences, evidence, and conclusions.

2. Writing Paragraphs  If you want to bake a cake, you follow a specific recipe, right?  If you want to write a paragraph, you follow a specific recipe to make it great!

3. What is the recipe for a good paragraph?  Topic sentence- explains the main idea of the paragraph  Evidence- supports the topic sentence  Conclusion- restates the topic sentence

4. Topic Sentences:  Topic sentences state the topic or main idea of a paragraph  The topic sentence is the first sentence of a body paragraph  Topic sentences come from each reason in the thesis  Topic sentences are written in the order that you find them in the thesis

5. Evidence:  Textual evidence comes from the text and supports your topic sentence. It shows how you know the topic sentence is true.  Textual evidence must be written exactly as it is in the text or book  Evidence needs to be formatted correctly with quotation marks around it  You need to cite the page number of each quotation

6. Conclusion:  The conclusion rephrases the thesis  It summarizes what’s been said in the body paragraphs  The conclusion leaves the reader with some idea or insight to think about  The conclusion answers the question: so what ? – it tells the reader why s/he should care

7. Example People should exercise every day. First of all, exercising makes your body healthier. Second of all, exercising gives you endorphins that improves your mood. That is why it is important to exercise every day.

They also can be very fun and playful with their owners. Next, cats are very civilized in the house. Unlike dogs, cats can be easily trained to use a litter box. Finally, cats are extremely easy to care for. Because cats play on their own, owners don’t need to exercise their animals like other pet owners do. Clearly, there are many reasons why cats make great pets. (Use page #4 to answer these questions!)
