The Real Answer The phases of the moon are caused by the relative position of the Earth – Moon – and Sun. The lit section is caused by sunlight reflecting off the moons surface. Except for a Lunar Eclipse, 50% of the moons surface is always in daylight! The dark section is the “night” side of the moon. A lunar day lasts 2 weeks – and a lunar night, 2 weeks.
