WG Goals and Workplan We have a charter, we have a group of interested people…what are our plans? goalsOur goals should reflect what we have listed in our charter. I believe we also need to discuss how we can fund our efforts… Lets go thru the Technical Objectives:

Discussion for each Objective We need to decide the best path for our group to take for each technical objective –Are there existing projects or standards we should join/support? –Do we have someone willing to spearhead this particular effort? –How can our group support (fund) the required effort to achieve the objective? –What are the relevant timescales (milestones)? It may be that there are multiple efforts for each goal or efforts that contribute to multiple goals.

Developing toolkits/documentation 1)“Develop and make available toolkits and documentation so that existing expert knowledge and tools for high throughput data transfers, packet loss ant throughput-limit monitoring, and collaborative systems are widely known” Who: How: When: Existing work:

Deploying testing/monitoring 2) “Deploy testing and monitoring programs, link and site instrumentation, and a standard methodology, in association with the Internet2 End-to-End Initiative, so that all of HENP’s major network paths are adequately monitored, and maintained at full capability “ Who: How: When: Existing work:

Configuration/testing examples 3) “Provide advice on the configuration of routers, switches, PCs and network interfaces, and network testing and problem resolution, to achieve high performance over local and wide area networks in production, among an increasing number of sites.” Who: How: When: Existing work:

Grid Interaction 4) “ Work with the staffs of the international (Tier0), national (Tier1), regional (Tier2) and local (Tier3) Grid facilities as needed, to verify high throughput and network responsiveness in point-to-point and multipoint network applications, in association with the Grid projects, and for new collaborative interactive systems. “ Who: How: When: Existing work:

Develop Network Knowledgebase 5) “Work with the sites, and expert networking teams where available at national labs, universities, and computational science centers, to develop and expand on a knowledge base for high performance networks, available to the HENP community. Develop a support base of knowledgeable engineers, technicians and scientists to assist with the above goals “ Who: How: When: Existing work:

HENP Networking Needs 6) “Work to identify and track the programmatic network needs of the current and next generation HENP: quantitatively in terms of bandwidths, throughputs and computer system capabilities required to provide the needed overall performance; and qualitatively in terms of the features and characteristics of existing and new systems needed for efficient distributed data analysis “ Who: How: When: Existing work:

Plan for Petabyte Scale virtual data 7) “Work with GriPhyN, PPDG, EU DataGrid, iVDGL and other Grid projects to ensure that the US and global network infrastructures are meeting the programmatic needs of scientists accessing PetaByte-scale virtual data.“ Who: How: When: Existing work:

Develop Global/Regional NOCs 8) “Work with the network engineering staffs of the US and global research networks to help develop a Global Grid Operations Center, and Regional Grid Operations Centers as needed, so that the ensemble of research networks is able to work efficiently and provide the high level of capability required “ Who: How: When: Existing work:

From here… At the end of this meeting we will try to set our next meeting time and place The mailing list is the best means of keeping everyone posted on issues or progress( henp-net-l@lists.bnl.gov) We also have WWW page at: http://www.usatlas.bnl.gov/computing/mgm t/lhccp/henpnet/
