Simulation Training During Medical School for Pediatric Procedures: a Multi-Center Descriptive Study Figure 1. Effects of different training experiences on confidence in LP skills Figure 2. Effects of different training experiences on confidence in IV skills BACKGROUND Pediatric interns are expected to perform lumbar punctures (LP) on infants and intravenous catheterizations (IV) in children Little is known about medical school training experiences for infant LP and child IV OBJECTIVES To describe interns’ medical school experiences with infant LP and child IV To explore how experiences impact knowledge and confidence at the start of internship METHODS Anonymous online surveys were completed by interns during orientation at 10 pediatric centers across the United States Data collected from Patient Outcomes In Simulation Education (POISE) network Survey 10 questions about experience 5-item knowledge quiz Confidence self-assessment (4 item Likert) Medical school experiences 56% received didactic IV training 52% received simulation-based IV training 8% never observed an IV being placed in a child 51% performed an IV on a child 73% reported success Knowledge Average score = 33% (5 item quiz) Confidence 31% of interns were confident with IV skills Medical school experiences 23% received didactic infant LP training 16% received simulation infant LP training 30% never observed an infant LP 26% attempted an infant LP 55% reported success Knowledge Average score = 57% (5 item quiz) Confidence 23% of interns were confident with LP skills Infant Lumbar Puncture Intravenous Catheterizations 189 out of 190 eligible interns from 10 centers completed the survey RESULTS D. O. Kessler, A. Krantz, K. Santiago, G. Kamdar, E. Weinberg, M. Petrescu, G. Arteaga, L. Haubner, C. Strother, J. Lindower, J. Rocker, M. Miller, J. Foltin, M. Auerbach CONCLUSIONS Interns have minimal LP/IV training or experience during medical school. Confidence is low for both infant LP and child IV Greater confidence in LP is seen in those who had clinical or simulation experiences The impact of simulator training on clinical outcomes should be studied prospectively PEDIATRIC SITES 1.
