What is Advanced Professional Certification for Civil Engineers? Licensed civil engineers with advanced professional and technical expertise in geotechnical engineering Similar to board certification in other professions (e.g., medical, legal, accounting) Demonstrates attainment of advanced body of knowledge and commitment to life-long learning Enhances the profession for the benefit of the next generation of engineering leaders

ASCE Academy History 1998, 2007 - ASCE Policy Statement 465 and 524 2004 – Civil Engineering Certification, Inc. (CEC) 2004 – Academy of Water Resources Engineers 2008 - Academy of Geo-Professionals 2009 – Academy of Coastal, Ocean, Port & Navigation Engineers founded

Goals of the Academy Strengthening the practice within the Geo-Profession for the public welfare Elevate qualifications Enhance technical practice Develop leadership Promote ethical practice Advocate life-long learning Recognize individuals with specialized knowledge

Requirements for D.GE Certification Achieve Body of Knowledge required for Diplomate status B.S. + M.S. or 30 hours of specialty graduate courses P.E. License 8 years post-P.E. progressive experience in specialty Active in geotechnical engineering Be of good moral character and high ethical standing Complete application with references Competency assessed by panel of peers including oral examination (may be waived)

Methods to Amplify D.GE Acceptance Require D.GE certification for promotion to, or hiring of, senior staff levels Include “working towards D.GE certification” in the job descriptions of lower level staff AGP is also working with Large public owners, and Architectural firms Cost of continuing education requirements are large – cost of D.GE to recognize achievement is minimal
