Ideas Clear purpose or main idea Each paragraph relates to main idea Clear, relevant details support main idea Stick to main idea, but leave out details that do not matter Enough information to cover the subject Title hooks the reader

Organization Lead grabs the reader and gives a sense of the main idea Pattern makes sense, easy to follow No gaps Paragraphs cover one idea Smooth transitions Conclusion ties together

Voice Shows writers thoughts and feelings Unique Personality Convincing, not fake Fun to read Lively or exciting

Word Choice Words paint a picture Words arent overused or repeated Natural language Strong action verbs Specific nouns Descriptive adjectives Similes and metaphors No vague, boring, overused words, slang, or cliches

Sentence Fluency Complete sentences Only intentional fragments Sentence length varies Sentence structure varies Sentence beginnings vary Smooth and easy to read
