Compounds Chapter 3 Section 2
2
Lesson Objectives Define Compound Describe How Elements Combine to Form Compounds Use Properties to Determine the Identity of a Compound
3
Keywords: Pure Substance Compound Chemical Change Specific Ratios Physical and Chemical Means Chemical Means Define Compound Describe How Elements Combine to Form Compounds Use Properties to Determine the Identity of a Compound
4
Keywords: Pure Sunstance A pure substance created when two or more elements chemically combine Ex: Magnesium + Oxygen Magnesium Oxide Define Compound Describe How Elements Combine to Form Compounds Use Properties to Determine the Identity of a Compound
5
Keywords: Compounds Define Compound Describe How Elements Combine to Form Compounds Use Properties to Determine the Identity of a Compound
6
Keywords: Compounds Define Compound Describe How Elements Combine to Form Compounds Use Properties to Determine the Identity of a Compound
7
Are you now able to…. I still feel unsure. I need some more help to understand. I feel ok. I need to do some more work on my own to check my understanding. I am happy and feel I understand and can explain the main points. Define Compound. Define Compound.
8
Keywords: Chemical Change Define Compound Describe How Elements Combine to Form Compounds Use Properties to Determine the Identity of a Compound In order for a compound to form, the elements must REACT and undergo a chemical change. Once they combine, they have different properties because they are a totally different substance.
9
Keywords: specific ratios Define Compound Describe How Elements Combine to Form Compounds Use Properties to Determine the Identity of a Compound When elements combine, they combine in specific ratios Ex: Water: 2 atoms of Hydrogen (1 g each) will combine with one atom of Oxygen (16g) Mass Ratio of Water 2:16 or 1:8 when reduced Mass ratio never changes!!

Are you now able to…. I still feel unsure. I need some more help to understand. I feel ok. I need to do some more work on my own to check my understanding. I am happy and feel I understand and can explain the main points. Use Properties to Determine the Identity of a Compound
11
Keywords: specific ratios Define Compound Describe How Elements Combine to Form Compounds Use Properties to Determine the Identity of a Compound Compounds have their own physical properties just like elements do. Ex: Melting points, boiling points, etc Compounds can also be identified by chemical properties. Ex: React with acids, react with water, react with light, etc.
12
Keywords: Chemical Means Define Compound Describe How Elements Combine to Form Compounds Use Properties to Determine the Identity of a Compound Compounds can be broken down. Some compounds can be broken into the elements that make them up. This can only be done by chemical means. Ex: Heating, electricity
13
Keywords: Chemical Means Define Compound Describe How Elements Combine to Form Compounds Use Properties to Determine the Identity of a Compound Compounds cannot be broken down by physical means. Ex: You can not filter water to get H and O You can not ground salt to get Na and Cl
