2 SOL 3.3 – 3.5 ► In the 1400’s, many Europeans began to explore the world. A European is a person from one of the countries in Europe. ► An explorer is someone who travels seeking new discoveries.

4 Christopher Columbus ► Columbus sailed with three ships from Spain to the Americas in search of riches and a western sea route west to the Indies. The name of the ships were the Pinta, Nina, and Santa Maria. The King and Queen of Spain paid for the voyage.

5 ► They set sail on Aug. 3, 1492 from Spain, and on October 11, 1492, spotted the Bahamas off southeastern North America.

14 Christopher Newport ► Christopher Newport was an English explorer. King James of England had sent Newport to the Americas to claim land for England. In 1607, Newport arrived at what is now Jamestown, Virginia, with 105 men. The settlers named their settlement and the James River after their king.

15 ► Captain Christopher Newport transported colonists to the first permanent English colony in America, Jamestown, and sailed back and forth from England to the New World five times between 1606 and 1611, transporting both supplies and colonists.

17 James River Fall Line ► At a fall line, streams flowing out of an upland region descend over rapids or waterfalls to the softer, and less rocky, soils of a coastal plain. ► The James River drops 105 feet from the beginning of the Fall Line to the end of the falls, where the river begins its gradual descent to sea level. ► Because the falls furnish waterpower, the fall line is the site of many cities
