I joined Electro-Motive in 1989 working as a student. Over the past 20 years I have served several of our design groups. –Applications, Cab Design, Powertrain, etc… For the last 3 years or so I have lead our Design Methods Module (DMM). –In charge of providing design application direction & support to the user community. –Design Methods acts as liaison between the user and IT. Introduce Yourself… Right On!

5 Why Classification? EMD is an old company with Hundreds of Thousands of “Recorded” parts. About 15 years ago we moved from Catalog cards to Excel Spreadsheets. Spreadsheets were loosely controlled causing errors. Errors lead to mistrust. Mistrust leads to avoidance. Avoidance leads to lost time. Lost time leads to lost $$$’s.
6
6 Why BCT Interface? Are you down wit’ BCT? Yeah, you know me! BCT-aClass afforded EMD a comfortable interface with a familiar look and feel. Works on top of NX and allows users to search the library of “Recorded” parts without leaving the NX Application. Upon discovery of some desired part, users can Open or Add parts in NX. If no part is found to be suitable, new parts can easily be added to the database.
7
7 What did EMD do?… And why? Hired a consultant with experience. We didn’t know the tool or pitfalls involved. Selected EMD individual to lead the project. This person would steer the project, learning at all levels and then become the Administrator. Set scope for the project. Get Bang for the Buck QUICKLY! Do easy, high volume stuff first. Roll in additional complexity as the users learn and acceptance grows. BCT- aClass?!? Jimmy Vosler Teamcenter Classification Ram from India

8 Develop Design Document with Specific Use Cases BCT Structure Creation and Maintenance Process Owner: DMM DMM creates, modifies and maintains the Recorded Parts Library in BCT aClass database. Utilization of BCT aClass Database Process Owner: Designers Designers search the parts as required in BCT aClass database and adds them appropriately into their assemblies. For the new recorded parts that are created for the new designs, "RECORDED" option in IRMF to be checked in. In case of missing part masters, Designer to create internal revision, Create the needed part master, Poke the recorded button on IRMF, Quick release it and report to DMM for updation in BCT. Segregating RECORDED Parts Process Owner: Checkers Checkers to deposit a copy of drawings of all "RECORDED "parts in the STD parts bin in the checking area. Periodic updation of STD parts in BCT aClass Database Process Owner: DMM DMM to pick up these new STD parts from checking and update them into BCT database on each Monday.

9 Task Identification & Distribution Build the Classification Structure. Administrator determined and implemented Retained Input from Lead Designers, Checkers, Supervisors & Standards Committee. Decided to use offshore resources to create images and populate the Structure. EMD had existing NX Masters making Part Family Creation nearly impossible. Classification Structure population becomes tedious when NX Masters are pre-existing and standards are loosely controlled.
10
10 Some Tasks Were Slow to Progress Outsourcing images & data structure. Give SPECIFIC instructions with examples. We spent too much time going back and forth. Legacy Data Validation. Ensure Parts are still Valid. Some were discontinued or simply invalid. Compare legacy Excel Spreadsheets against the corresponding Drawing.

12 How does EMD use it? There are three levels of access. Admin User is limited to a test environment. Admin user can build Classification Structure, add attributes & Import/Export Data. Classification Structure is built by business administrator, then exported to production with assistance from IT. Power Users are the “Librarians” from our DMM Group. Power User can add parts and edit existing attributes. DMM is business, Not IT. Simple Users can search the Structure for parts.
13
13 Admin User Functions – Adding Folders (Nodes) Select a Folder in which you want to add a sub-Folder. Right mouse click and select “Create node”. Select “Storage Class” option. Enter the new folder name in both ID and Name columns. Select “Finish” now and the new folder will be created in the structure.
14
14 Admin User Functions – Adding Images Select the Folder (Node) you wish to add an image to. Select Node Documentation. Select “Add external note doc” option. Browse to the image you wish to use. Name the Image. Now the Image is imported to the BCT Classification Structure.
15
15 Power User Functions – Adding Parts to Classification Structure Select Folder (Node) you want to add Part Numbers to. Poke "Create a new instance“. Enter the part number and attributes OK. Open the part is NX. Select the new instance in BCT Right Click Attach Item Workpart Item... Poke Yes in Pop-up. Notice Icon Changes.
16
16 User Functions – Searching Parts Launch BCT interface from NX Manager. Navigate to the folder you wish to search. Enter desired search criteria. Select desired part. Right click Add Part. The Add Component Dialogue will be initiated and user can complete the task using normal NX functions.
17
17 What did EMD do right? Hired a consultant with experience. We know enough to know we didn’t know enough. Set a realistic scope. EMD has about 200K recorded parts. We started with Structural parts and will grow from there. Developed consistant rules for attributes & dimensions for 2D & 3D images. Helps users during searches. Validated all legacy input data for accuracy. If users get burned by invalid searches, they’ll stop using the tool.
18
18 What did EMD do wrong? We didn’t use family of parts to propagate NX & BCT database. Family of parts function would dramatically reduce Classification Structure updation. Unfortunately, EMD already has NX Masters for most recorded parts. Where was Teamcenter Classification 15 years ago when we started using Unigraphics?... Rats! We didn’t set the Attribute & Dimensioning rules early enough in the game. Too much time was spent re-doing images. Consider doing this in-house. It’s really not that big a task and may help determine Classification Structure.
19
19 What did it Cost EMD? BCT aClass Software$31k TCe Classification$24k EMD already had this, although not being used. Initial Offshore cost$50k Additional effort to completion$50k $155k Total
20
20 Where are the expected savings? Reduced Part Number Creation. Reduction in redundant inventory. Efficiency gains in finding Recorded parts. Improved ability to outsource work since all Recorded parts are easily accessed thru NX. Quicker ramp-up of contract and new employees.
