4 How can self-imposed barriers prevent people from growing and experiencing their dreams?

5 Fences Fences are good because…Fences are bad because… Divide you from neighbor problems Provide privacy Create boundaries Protection Keep pets contained A sense of style (decorate them) Create boundaries Restricts exploration A symbol of disagreement Creates a limited space Doesn’t allow anything new

6 Paper Swap Read the question & answer it in 30 seconds. – It is assumed that you will EXPLAIN your answer. Don’t always rely on the directions to tell you whether or not to explain. Just do it. Pass it to your right. Read the new question and the other person’s answer. ADD TO IT. – Provide an example or explain more or argue against it.

7 Reflection: 1.What are examples of fences in our lives? 2.Based on our discussion today, write a 2-3 sentence prediction about Fences.

8 Journal Explodes REQUIREMENTS 5 paragraphs – Introduction – Conclusion 3 middle supporting paragraphs – Evidence – Examples – Personal stories/anecdotes Thesis statement RUBRIC Each paragraph = 5 points Thesis statement = 5 points Details/evidence to support/explain thesis statements = 5 points GREAT vocab = 5 bonus points 40 points total

9 Thesis Statements Includes topic & claim: – Maryland should not change its law because children must learn responsibility and independence when left home alone. Does NOT include phrases like: – I think – You should – (really, anything with personal pronouns)

10 We have ____ days of school left… Do you read and write at an 11 th grade level? Are you ready for 12 th grade? Can you prove that you read and write well enough for a high school diploma? Do you have the necessary skills to be a successful adult?
