1 Promotion Requirements for Sixth Grade 2006 – 2007 Students on Regular Pupil Progression Leon County Schools

2 Legislative Requirements The 2006 – 2007 Legislature passed House Bill 7087 related to middle grades promotion.

3 Legislative Requirements Beginning with students entering grade 6 in the 2006 - 2007 school year, promotion from a middle school requires that students successfully complete the following academic courses.

4 Legislative Requirements English 3 middle school or higher year long courses Mathematics 3 middle school or high year long course Social Studies 3 middle school or high year long course Science 3 middle school or high year long course Career and Education Planning – to be completed in 7 th or 8 th grade

5 Class Performance Your child is expected to satisfactorily perform academic work on the sixth- grade level throughout this school year. Your child must pass five of the six courses taken, three of which must be in the areas of English, Mathematics, Science or Social Studies.

6 Class Performance To pass a course, four or more grade points must be earned during the year and at least one of these must be earned during the last two grading periods.

7 Minimum Competency Your child is expected to demonstrate competency in the areas of reading, writing, math, social studies and science at the following levels:

8 English (Includes Reading/Language Arts Mastery of all grade-level Core Benchmarks as evidenced by a grade of D or better. (Core Benchmarks are the most important concepts and skills a student should learn.) Score at or above the 25 th national percentile on a norm-reference test (for example, FCAT-NRT).

9 English (Includes Reading/Language Arts Score at or above Level 2 on FCAT-SSS Reading.

10 Writing Mastery of all grade-level Core Benchmarks as evidenced by a grade of D of better. A score of 3.5 or higher on any District Writes Upon Request Administration

11 Math Mastery of all grade-level Core Benchmarks as evidenced by a grade of D or better. (Core Benchmarks are the most important concepts and skills a student should learn.) Score at or above the 25 th national percentile on a norm-referenced test (for example, FCAT-NRT)

12 Math Score at or above Level 2 on FCAT – SSS Math.

13 Science Mastery of Grade – Level Expectations as evidenced by a grade of D or better.

14 Social Studies Mastery of Grade – Level Expectations as evidenced by a grade of D or better. The new social studies requirement stipulates that students must complete three (3) middle school or higher year- long courses in social studies, one semester of which must include the study of state and federal government and civics education.
