Your child will likely have a fever, pull at her ears, and be irritable. She may also have trouble sleeping. Signs and symptoms common in children include: Ear pain, especially when lying down. Tugging or pulling an ear. Difficulty sleeping. Crying more than usual. Acting more irritable than usual.

An ear infection is caused by a virus or bacteria in the middle ear. This infection often results from another illness-cold, flu or allergy-that causes congestion and swelling of the nasal passages, throat and Eustachian tubes.

Most ear infection don’t need treatments with antibiotics. What ‘s best for your child depends on many factors, including your child’s age and the severity symptoms.

Prevent common colds and illness. Teach your child to wash her or his hands frequently and thoroughly, teach your child not to share eating and drinking utensils. If possible, limit the time you child spends in group child care. A child care setting fewer children may help.
