The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts was founded by professor Ivan Tsvetaev. The museum building was designed by Roman Klein and Vladimir Shukhov. It opened its doors to the public in May 1912.

Moscow State University is the oldest in Russia. It was founded in 1755 by outstanding Russian scientist and encyclopedist Mikhail Lomonosov

The Kremlin at the centre of Moscow is an outstanding historical and architectural monument that serves as a symbol for Russia.

Designed by Bove and Mikhailov and built in1824 it is a master- piece of neo-classical design. Its history is link- ed with F.Shaliapin and L.Sobinov, G.Ulanova and O.Lepeshinskaya. The Bolshoi Theatre company is more than 200 years old and it is famous throughout the world.

The museum was foun- ded in 1872 by I.Zabelin and A.Uvarov interested in promotion of Russian history and national self awareness. The board of trustees composed of S.Solovyov and Klyuchevskiy. The project of the building was done by V.Sherwood.

The splendid two- storied palace in Classicism style was Put up in 1778-1782 by architect M.Kaza- kov. The building was intended for Moscow Governer-General Z.Chernyshev. Nowadays it houses the City Hall.

St.Basil Cathedral is one of the most outstanding monuments of Old Russian architecture. It was designed by Russian architects Barma and Postnik in the 16 th century. The cathedral is a symmetrical ensemble of 8 chapels surrounding the 9th one.

In 1812 Russian Em- peror Alexander I sig- ned an order to build a temple dedicated to- Russian victory over Napoleon in Moscow. Built in1883 by Konstantin Ton, the cathedral was blown up in 1931 to be restored in 2000.

Kitai-gorod is one of the oldest parts of Moscow. It is well known that in the 11 th century it was already inhabited. The name has nothing to do with China. Most probably it comes from the old Russian word “kita” that means a bunch of poles.

The unique monu- ment of the 18 th cen- tury it used to be the summer residence of Sheremetyev Counts. Magnificent construc-tions such as the Palace,Grotto,Hermitage, old church, and Italian and Dutch houses survived until nowadays.
