3
Mood – is the feeling the author/speaker is trying to evoke in the reader. Authors will convey this with word choice, setting, characters.
4
Imagine a guy invites his girlfriend over for a romantic dinner. The mood is going to be different if she walks into his house and sees this…. Or this…

David woke up feeling the oppressive heat. The sheets were sticking to him, the air almost too heavy to breathe. The rusted, metal bedframe had burst another spring during the night and he felt the sharp end digging into his spine. He slapped off the alarm and tried to go back to sleep, but the sound of the neighbors, arguing already at 6 a.m., ruined any chances. The smell of garbage from nearby unemptied cans permeated the room.

The sun sparkled on the mica in the sidewalk, casting a light that looked almost like diamonds. It was the beginning of summer, the air still cool enough in the morning to require a sweater. Lisa awoke to the sound of birdsong and scent of jasmine blowing through her bedroom.

Tone – How the author/speaker feels about the subject.
12
This is often NOT obvious in a Novel. You will see it more clearly in persuasive works.

Parents who allow children to make a scene in restaurants should be fined. I can’t count the number of times my husband and I have made reservations, dressed up, gone to a nice restaurant, only to have the mood spoiled by a screaming brat and his doting parents. I think if a child is crying in public, the parents should be required to take him or her outside. The rest of us don’t need to have our experiences ruined by people who can’t control their kids.

One of the hardest and least appreciated jobs in the world is parenthood. No child comes with an instruction manual; we all have to make it up as we go and hope and pray we’re doing the right things. We’re counselors, nurses, bankers, advisers, teachers, cooks, laundresses. People that have no patience with weary parents either have no children or have forgotten what it’s like to juggle a job, a home and children.
