Biodiesel - Biotic Crystal Suggs Dr. Simpson APES 19 March 2012

Biodiesel A substitute fro regular petroleum diesel. It is usually produced by extracting oil from algae and plants such as soybeans and palm. A substitute fro regular petroleum diesel. It is usually produced by extracting oil from algae and plants such as soybeans and palm. APPLICATION APPLICATION –In the US, many policy makers are encouraging the production of ethanol and biodiesel as a way to reduce the need to import foreign oil while also supporting US farmers and declining rural economics.

Flex-fuel vehicles A vehicle that runs on either gasoline or ethanol A vehicle that runs on either gasoline or ethanol APPLICATION APPLICATION –Trucks that run on flex-fuel

Hydroelectricity Electricity generated by the kinetic energy of moving water Electricity generated by the kinetic energy of moving water Second most common form of renewable energy in the US and in the world and it is the most widely used for electricity generation. Second most common form of renewable energy in the US and in the world and it is the most widely used for electricity generation. APPLICATION APPLICATION –Nearly 20% of all electricity comes from hydroelectric power plants. –China is the world’s leading producer of hydroelectricity followed by Brazil and the US

Run-of-the-river Hydroelectricity generation in which water is retained behind a low dam or no dam. Hydroelectricity generation in which water is retained behind a low dam or no dam. APPLICATION APPLICATION –This produce little flooding upstream and seasonal changes in river flow are not disrupted

Water Impoundment Storing water in a reservoir behind a dam Storing water in a reservoir behind a dam APPLICATION APPLICATION –The largest hydroelectric water impoundment dam in the US is the Grand Coulee Dam in Washington State, which generates 6,800 MW at peak capacity

Tidal Energy Uses gates and turbines similar to those used in the run-of-the-river and water impoundment systems to capture the kinetic energy of water flowing through estuaries, rivers, and bays and convert in into electricity. Uses gates and turbines similar to those used in the run-of-the-river and water impoundment systems to capture the kinetic energy of water flowing through estuaries, rivers, and bays and convert in into electricity. APPLICATION APPLICATION –Used in France, Korea, and Canada

Siltation The accumulation of sediments on the bottom of the reservoir The accumulation of sediments on the bottom of the reservoir APPLICATION APPLICATION –The Edwards Dam

Active Solar Energy Capture the energy of sunlight with the use of technologies such as small-scale solar water heating systems, and photovoltaic solar cells. Capture the energy of sunlight with the use of technologies such as small-scale solar water heating systems, and photovoltaic solar cells. APPLICATION APPLICATION –Many houses are solar powered to reduce electricity bills

Photovoltaic Solar Cells Capture energy from the Sun as light, not heat, and convert it directly into electricity Capture energy from the Sun as light, not heat, and convert it directly into electricity APPLICATION APPLICATION –Used in homes to supply electricity in the house
