4 Overview The growth in the use of motor vehicle transportation for personal and commercial purposes has revolutionized our society. Widespread use of motor vehicles has allowed several key industries to grow and profit. The petroleum (fuel) industry is one of them. The lifeblood of the transportation industry is the fuel used to power the millions of vehicles that travel our highways every day. 4 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013. All rights reserved.

5 Identify the Advantages of Biodiesel vehicle design Biodiesel is a renewable, high-quality fuel that can be created from a variety of source. It can often be produced locally. The fuel created from these renewable resources emits less pollutants than petroleum fuels. Biodiesel is a high-performance fuel with a strong cetane rating. 5 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013. All rights reserved.

6 Research Various Types of Biodiesel Vehicles The production of biodiesel in the United States has grown steadily over the past decade. In 2011, the US produced approximately one billion gallons. Domestic and international automakers have made strong improvements in fuel miles per gallon, engine durability, and performance of biodiesel vehicles. 6 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013. 7 Research Types of Biodiesel Vehicles Many engine manufacturers have accepted the use of blended biodiesel in their engines. Biodiesel reduces carbon emissions by 86 %. The fuel efficiency for biodiesel vehicles is very impressive. Research new models and fuel efficiency ratings. 7 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013. All rights reserved.

8 Research Various Industrial Biodiesel Applications Diesel engines are used in a variety of applications other than in power plants for motor vehicles. Diesel engines have the advantage of being very durable and low maintenance. Several examples of the industrial use of diesel engines with biodiesel are listed below. Construction equipment (bulldozers, backhoes, and graders) Power generators Trains and locomotives Irrigation pumps Agricultural equipment (tractors and pickers) Fishing, ferry, and tour boats 8 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013.
