These currently include a focus on cities of the future, rural infrastructure and access, and spatial modelling platforms. Cities of the future Rural infra- structure & access Spatial modelling platforms Rooted in sciences of complexity and sustainability, this group investigates the tools and methodologies required to guide city-related design, technological innovation and decision-making towards development trajectories that are relevant to the challenges of the 21st century. Studies the effectiveness of rural transport nodes (hubs), rural trade centres and corridors on the growth and development tempo of selected rural settlements Facilitates development endeavours pertaining to gender and the built environment Involved in the development of a model for sustainable rural village development Harnesses geospatial technologies for the purposes of enhanced spatial intelligence, development assessment and intervention targeting in both the urban and rural built environment domains

21 Copyright @ CSIR 2005 www.csir.co.za Purpose of C-PavE Address the current skills shortages Ensure transfer of knowledge from the B50s to the new and emerging engineers Create a pipeline of technical / engineering staff in the field of pavement engineering Link the pipeline with actual APT research and investigation done –for Gautrans –for SANRAL –For other authorities as applicable –for CSIR –Also internationally: California/US Army CE/Sweden/Florida/Other Produce up to 50 new, hi-tech knowledgeable technologists / engineers with MTek/MSc/PhDs at TEIs within 5 years. Link up with CETA for outreach skills development Have outreach skills development linkages to 500 practitioners at all levels, within 5 years ( special dissemination seminars/ workshops)
