7. FACTS  The rate of illiteracy in America’s correctional systems is over 60%. This means that people who cannot read or write are more likely to have a criminal record.  Children of disadvantaged parents begin their school life behind their peers. Parents with minimal or no reading skills often cannot provide the kind of support their children need to do well in school.  Adults with low-level reading skills frequently suffer from health problems because they lack the ability to read medical directions, health-related literature or prescription labels.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU  By the 8 th grade, students NOT reading on a proficient level are at higher risk of dropping out of school.  A young person who drops out of school will always face a much harder road in life.  Employers are looking for workers who can perform the work required and able to communicate in an effective manner.
