Its A Girl! - Born April 3, 1934, in London England to Montimer Herbert Goodall and Margaret Myfanwe Joseph. - Loved Dr. Doolittle Books and Tarzan Books -Thought that she would make a better “Jane” for Tarzan

- Left school at age 18 -Had dream of going to Africa - Finally left the U.K in the summer of 1960 to Africa. Jane’s dream was a very unorthodox one for women at the time.

Doctor Louis Leaky - Archaeologist and Paleontologist - Met Jane In Africa, and Invited her on a dig with him -Jane was his secretary, and he introduced her to chimpanzees

David Greybeard “The Door Opener” - First chimp to use/make tools - First chimp to be seen eating meat - Inspired Jane for most of her later studies

- Club Established by Jane and other researchers to build trust by: Imitating behaviors, (spending time in trees) imitating sounds, etc. -Discovered: chimps have a complex social system, rituals, they hunt in packs and they have their own language made up of 20+ sounds

Chimps eat meat Chimps use tools Chimps can catch human diseases Chimps have a language built of 20+ sounds Chimps move and hunt in groups of 15+ chimps Chimps have the same nurturing instinct that humans do. Males have a dominant role in the tribe, but a small role in the home, and females have a dominant role in the home but a small role in the tribe

Honors and Major Events Received the J. Paul Getty Wildlife Conservation Prize had articles published in National Geographic 8th person to receive Ph.D. from Cambridge without a baccalaureate first Established Jane Goodall Institute for Wildlife, Research, Education and, Conservation in 1975

Honors and Major Events 1985, research is published In the Shadow of Man, 1st major book is published-- 1971 Married Derek Bryceson after divorcing Van Lawick Wrote Through a Window-- 1990

F U N F A C T S - Chimps can catch human diseases - Males have dominant roles in the Tribe, but small roles at home, females are considered more Important - Goodall was married twice, first to Hugo Van Lawick, and second to Derek Bryceson, a former member of parliament - David Greybeard (the “door opener chimp”) was first named Bananas!
