Ch. 11 Notes Crusades-A vigorous concerted movement against an abuse or for a cause and a remedial enterprise undertaken with zeal and enthusiasm. Reasons for Going on the Crusades: “God Wills it!” Desire to retake the Holy Land from the Turks. Inspired by Faith. Desire to acquire new lands & riches. Love of adventure. Desire for Spiritual rewards. Started when Alexuis I asked Europe for help fighting the Seljuk Turks (Muslims), Pope Urban II saw an opportunity to expand papal power & leadership.

Effects of the Crusades Although unsuccessful in regaining the Holy Lands, the Crusades had many important political, social, and economical effects on Europe: Political: –Power of Kings increased –Middle class developed Social: –Hastened the decline of feudalism –New military weapons & tactics –Exchange of cultural ideas Economic: –Rise of Italian cities –Desire for new products stimulated trade.
