europe: the center of exploration TECHNICALLY ADVANCED- Had Weapons made of Metal, Sailing ships, printing press, compass Men were in Charge- Patriarchal In 1000 A.D. the catholic Church Controls Religion, Politics, and economics Feudalism gives way to the idea of private property. Land is dominated and to be conquered by man. CRUSADES: Begin in 1095 and last nearly 300 years. Crusades lead to discovery of new products such as silk, spices, mathematics, and foods. Sparks the exploration of people such as vasco de gama, Prince Henry of Portugal, and columbus.

AMERICA: THE “NEW WORLD” North America Mountains and rivers are sacred land not owned directly by anyone. One theory is that people arrived there over 20,000 years ago from siberia. Over 500 different tribes and over 1000 languages. No Written Records. South America Land is sacred but divided among different empires. Matriarchal in some tribes, but mostly, men are in charge. Great Indian civilizations: maya, aztec, Inca (or triple alliance) No Written Records. Biggest enemy was DISEASE- No Immunities.

IMPORTANT TO NOTE By the time European exploration is done, these three worlds have been completely changed. Africa is being exploited for slaves and gold, reducing their power in the world tremendously. The populations of North and South America are being devastated by disease and war, and cultures are being lost. The European continent has become the dominant power in the world.

Vasco da Gama- Portugal 1497 Claim to Fame: Discovered an all- water route to asia Christopher Columbus Spain 1492 Claim to Fame: First European to reach the Caribbean Sea and create a permanent settlement there. Ferdinand Magellan Spain 1519-1522 Claim to Fame: First to sail around the world.

OTHER NAMES TO KEEP IN MIND Bartolemeu Dias- Portugal, (1487- 1488)- First to round the Cape of Good Hope at tip of Africa John Cabot- England (1497)- Sailed along east coast of North America Prince Henry “The Navigator”- Portugal. Started a school of navigation for sailors.
