Newly revised academic state standards for school districts Formed by: National Governors Association for Best Practices Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) Standards developed with help from teachers, administrators, and educational experts Provide universal understanding of what students will learn Standards allow consistent benchmark areas across each state Students from all states will be on “the same page” academically

4 Qualities of Common Core Understandable Consistent Evidence-based Rigorous content to promote higher thinking Enhancement of current state standards Better prepares students for college and work world

5 What is the Process? Writing the standards NGA and CCSSO asked the thoughts from teachers, researchers, and experts Divided in 2 categories College and career readiness standards K-12 Standards Two public comments created by NGA and CCSSO Received 10,000 comments from education professionals, parents, and community citizens concerned about education

6 Categories of Common Core College and Career Readiness Standards Expectations of what students should learn after graduating high school Draft of standards available for public comment in September 2009 K-12 Standards Expectations of what students should learn during the elementary and high school years Draft of standards available for public comment in March 2010

7 Myth vs. Fact Causes all states to take an academic step down Only includes skills- does not include significance of content knowledge Teachers had no say in constructing standards Standards are a curriculum for all schools Standards require higher thinking and advance state standards to a higher level Common Core addresses both skills and content Teachers contributed in the drafting process Standards are actually shared goals about what students should be learning to succeed
