Transference: When client identifies in the therapist characteristics that are reminiscent of the person they are transferring their emotions from. Counter-transference: When therapist identifies feelings attached to unresolved conflict from other past or present relationships in their therapeutic relationship with their client.

When the problem is not easily identifiable When the person seems suicidal or extremely depressed When unhealthy dependence or transference is taking place When no progress is being made after 3-4 sessions When the problem can be effectively helped by community resources When the problem is beyond your training and expertise
